IN LOVING MEMORY

Jack Musten ((Coach/Teacher))

Jack Musten ((Coach/Teacher))

Kernersville – Mr. Jack Lee Musten, 85, died peacefully on the evening of May 14, 2016 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem. Jack was born August 31, 1930 in Forsyth County to John and Elva Musten.

A graduate of Kernersville High School, Wingate College, and Elon College. Jack Musten had a distinguished career as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Jack taught Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Bible History.

Jack served as the head basketball and baseball coach at Glenn High School in Kernersville, from 1955-1962. He then moved to East Forsyth High School, where he was the head baseball coach from 1962-1985, and during that time, he also served as the athletic director for six years. Coach Musten also started a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at East Forsyth.
Jack is a member of several Halls of Fame: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame (1985), Glenn High School Sports Hall of Fame (1996), Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame (1993), North Carolina High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame (2002), and the East Forsyth Hall of Fame (2012). In 1986, East Forsyth High School dedicated its new gymnasium to Jack L. Musten and named it in his honor.

Jack Musten's coaching career spanned 30 years and three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. In six years of coaching basketball and baseball at Glenn High School, his basketball teams competed in state playoffs two years, and the baseball team won five straight conference championships. In one four-year period, the baseball team won 108 games and lost only 12 games. Coach Musten was twice-named Forsyth County Coach of the Year.

At East Forsyth, he had seven conference championships in baseball and went to the state playoffs nine times. In 1952, he coached the North Carolina All-Star Basketball Team. His love for all sports was contagious, and he made sure that anyone under his influence knew how and where to fish.

Even though Coach Musten received many sports awards, his greatest reward came from the testimonies of former students who credited both their successes and their ability to make important life decisions to his influence. Many have claimed that he was their greatest role model as a father, teacher, and mentor. The way Jack touched many lives demonstrated that his love of family, church, and community was paramount.

Jack Musten will be most remembered for the immeasurable way he cared for and motivated students in the classroom, on the ball field, and most importantly through the sharing of his Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Frances Musten, three brothers: Carl Bynum, J.C., and Waymer Musten, and two sisters: Louise Crutchfield and Mildred Berrier.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Wilson Musten, a son, Danny Lee Musten (Linda) of Raleigh, three grandchildren: Laura Sink (Erik), Sarah Musten, and Evan Musten, one great grandchild, Stetson, a sister, Becky Swaim (Wade), three step-children: Jill Hoppa, Heather Shoaf, and Tim Shoaf, and five step-grandchildren: Jake, Jerry, Zach, Camden, and Mason.

A funeral service officiated by Dr. Stephen Martin will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church - Youth Ministry, 401 Oakhurst St, Kernersville, NC 27284 or Hospice & Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Coach/Teacher/ and all around great Man, That is Jack Musten!! His life on earth was devoted to God, Family and Job as a #1 Teacher that I ever had! He gained my respect for him in Biology Class, seems as if Mike Merritt and myself didn't listen to him when he said no talking during our Biology test. So, the little room between his classroom and Mrs Ross's class became our punishment area! Mr Musten had a broom and handed it to Mike and myself and he said without a smile, you punish each other and if I see you pulled off and didn't do the job right, then he would take over. We did as good as we could!! Mr.Jack Musten you made a big difference in my life for the good! I know you are sitting on the right side of God where you will always be a Coach of Life, I feel so Blessed to have had you as my Teacher!!

I played basketball under Coach during my first year at East in 1971-72. A gentlemen in every respect. I appreciated his attention to detail and his attention to his players. He did the work the Lord sent him here to do. Save a seat for me Coach!!
