Betty White (Teacher)

Kernersville September 14, 1932 - November 23, 2016 Betty Ann Martin White, age 84, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones. Betty was brought into this world by Robert and Pearl Martin on Sept. 14, 1934 and was raised by Jesse and Geneva Stewart, her foster parents, in Pilot Mountain. Betty led an accomplished life. She graduated from Pilot Mountain High School with honors and attended Guilford College. At Guilford, Betty was elected May Queen by her peers and excelled academically, receiving a bachelor's of science in mathematics. Her yearbook description by classmates complemented her well: "Lovely to look at and delightful to know." She began her career at Western Electric Company as a computer programmer and transitioned into education where she was head of the mathematics department at Salem Academy and also taught at East Forsyth High School. She loved her students. During this time, she started a floral companyHeritage Flowerswith her husband in Kernersville, North Carolina. Betty was dedicated to her family and friends. On December 27, 1958, she married Jack Murray White and they moved to Kernersville in 1965. They had two beautiful daughters and Betty invested 6 years of her life in their early childhood development by staying home with them. In addition to her professional and family accomplishments, Betty was active in her communityfrom a leader in historic preservation at Korner's Folly, a dedicated member of Kernersville Moravian Church and Friedland Moravian Church to an avid gardener. Betty served as a source of care and inspiration for her daughters, family, and friends. Betty is also remembered as an excellent hostess, frequently preparing elaborate meals for her extended family and her friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack; Jessie and Geneva; and her brothers, (Clarence, Paul) and sister (Ruby). She is survived by her daughters, Anna Terman-White (Russ) of Omaha, NE and Elizabeth M. White (Bill) of Corolla, N.C.; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Jordan (Dean) of Camden, SC; nephews, Jeff Jordan (Debbie) and Scott Jordan both of Camden, SC; her great-nieces and great-nephewsCaroline, Thomas, Campbell, Renne, Mary Caroline, and Eleanor Jordan all of Camden, South Carolina. No words can convey her deep love and gratitude for the years of friendship that she had with those from Perquimans, Forsyth, and Surry County, the KTL Club, her Carova family, and her exceptional caregivers--all of whom have held a place in her heart. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 2 PM at Friedland Moravian Church in Winston-Salem.
